Christian women from different church denominations converged in Abuja on Friday to seek divine intervention for peace, unity and national renewal as part of activities marking the 2026 observance of the World Day of Prayer.

The annual gathering, observed in more than 170 countries and regions, brings together women across Christian traditions to pray for nations, communities and global peace.

This year’s programme was held under the theme “I Will Give You Rest: Come,” drawn from the Gospel of Matthew 11:28–30.

The prayer event comes at a time when Nigeria continues to confront security challenges in several regions, including banditry, kidnapping and violent attacks that have heightened public concern.

Speaking at the gathering, the National Chairperson of the World Day of Prayer in Nigeria, Eunice Kalu, described the theme as a call for people facing difficulties to seek comfort and strength in faith.

According to her, many individuals are weighed down by different burdens ranging from insecurity and economic hardship to personal struggles.

“Jesus is calling us to come to Him and when we do, He becomes our burden bearer. He lifts our burdens and gives us rest,” she said.

Kalu urged Nigerians to remain united in prayer while seeking divine guidance in addressing the country’s challenges.

She noted that while government efforts to tackle insecurity are important, spiritual commitment and collective faith among citizens also play a role in fostering lasting peace.

Also addressing the gathering, the General Secretary of the movement in Nigeria, Deborah Oloche, explained that the initiative serves as an ecumenical platform where Christian women from different backgrounds come together for prayer and humanitarian engagement.

She said the movement operates under the principle of “informed prayer and prayerful action,” encouraging members not only to pray but also to support communities through charitable and outreach activities.

According to Oloche, the initiative promotes unity among Christians while inspiring women to translate their faith into acts of service and compassion.

In her remarks, the Head of the Prayer Committee, Yemisi Coker, highlighted the crucial role women play in families and society, noting that they often carry significant social and economic responsibilities.

She said this makes their role in interceding for their communities and the nation particularly significant.

Coker also noted that Nigeria’s role in preparing the programme for this year’s global observance marks an important milestone for the country within the international movement.

“Every nation will be directing their prayers toward Nigeria today, and we are trusting God that positive change will follow,” she said.

The event featured worship sessions, scripture readings and corporate prayers, with participants offering intercessions for national unity, leadership and peace across the world.

Organisers said hosting the programme in Abuja reflects Nigeria’s active participation in global Christian fellowship and its commitment to strengthening unity among women of faith across denominations.
