OPay Refutes Claims of Office Closure Over Alleged Tax Breaches

Digital financial services provider OPay has denied reports suggesting that its offices in Lagos and Abuja were sealed by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) over alleged tax infractions.
In a statement released by its management, the fintech firm described the reports circulating online as misleading, insisting that its operations across the country remain uninterrupted.
According to the company, all its offices are open and functioning normally, continuing to deliver services to customers, merchants and partners nationwide.
The reports had claimed that the firm’s premises were shut down by the tax authority for alleged violations relating to Value Added Tax and Company Income Tax provisions under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025.
However, OPay maintained that it remains fully compliant with all tax obligations and regulatory requirements in the country and continues to engage transparently with relevant government agencies.
The company explained that the notice referenced in the reports was connected to a broader directive recently issued by the tax authority to payment platforms operating in Nigeria.
It noted that the directive required fintech companies to clearly separate certain statutory charges on their applications in order to enhance transparency and ease reconciliation processes.
According to OPay, the instruction applies to several operators within the financial technology sector and was not targeted at the company alone.
“The suggestion that the notice indicates non-payment of taxes is factually incorrect and misleading,” the statement said.
The firm also expressed concern that some reports singled it out despite the directive affecting multiple players within the industry.
It urged members of the public to ignore claims that its offices had been sealed or that the company was shutting down operations.
OPay reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital economy, noting that it would continue to provide secure and reliable financial services to millions of users across the country.
