2027: ‘Don’t Campaign for Atiku, Obi in Yorubaland’ — Igboho Threatens

Sunday Igboho

A prominent Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has cautioned supporters of opposition figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi against campaigning in the South-West ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

In a video circulating widely on social media, Igboho openly declared his backing for the re-election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and warned that efforts to promote rival candidates in Yoruba-speaking states could face resistance.

Speaking in the clip, the activist challenged anyone willing to campaign for the opposition in the region, insisting that the South-West should rally behind Tinubu in the next presidential race.

Igboho also pledged what he described as “total support” for Tinubu’s second term bid in 2027, while controversially hinting that the president could even remain in office beyond that period, a suggestion that has generated widespread reactions.

The activist specifically mentioned Atiku, a former vice president, and Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, as politicians whose campaigns should not be entertained in the region.

Political observers note that Igboho, once widely associated with separatist agitation in the South-West, appears to have shifted his stance by aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress and pledging to resist activities he believes could destabilise the region.

His comments have triggered debate online, with critics questioning the legality of threats against political campaigns as well as the reference to a possible third term for the president, which Nigeria’s constitution does not permit.

Meanwhile, Atiku has previously spoken about his ties with the Yoruba community, maintaining that he has longstanding personal and family connections with the region and would work to protect the interests of all Nigerians if elected president.
