President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees interested in contesting the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was conveyed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

According to the statement, the order affects all categories of presidential appointees who intend to participate in party primaries or seek elective offices ahead of the 2027 polls.

It explained that the decision is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the conduct of party primaries.

A circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued through the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, listed those affected by the directive.

They include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants and personal assistants to the president.

Also affected are directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government agencies, parastatals, commissions and government-owned companies, as well as other political appointees.

The affected officials were instructed to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office not later than the March 31 deadline.

The presidency said the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws and maintaining transparency in the political process.

It added that the directive would help create a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections, while reaffirming the administration’s commitment to credible electoral processes and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
