Aremu Afolayan Backs Down, Apologises Over Tinubu Endorsement Remarks

Nollywood actor Aremu Afolayan has issued a public apology after facing intense backlash over comments he made while endorsing President Bola Tinubu for a second term.
The controversy followed the actor’s appearance at a recent EKO57 political gathering, where several entertainment figures, including Adams Kehinde, Remi Surutu and Yomi Fash-Lanso, converged to drum up early support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During his speech, Afolayan openly declared support for Tinubu’s re-election bid and appeared to dismiss concerns about the rising cost of living, stating that he was not personally affected by the economic hardship many Nigerians are grappling with.
He also made comments suggesting that reports of insecurity were exaggerated; a position that quickly drew criticism after a video of the event circulated widely on social media.
His remarks triggered a wave of outrage online, with many Nigerians accusing the actor of being insensitive to the realities faced by ordinary citizens. Others alleged that his comments were politically motivated.
Amid the growing criticism, Afolayan took to his Instagram page on Thursday to express regret, admitting that his words had caused hurt.
“I’m sorry. The curse has been too much… I didn’t offend anyone but I went wrong,” he said in an emotional video message.
The actor acknowledged that his comments on insecurity were particularly troubling, clarifying that he did not intend to deny the situation in the country.
“It’s obvious that insecurity is everywhere in Nigeria, and the government isn’t doing enough about it,” he added, in a shift from his earlier stance.
Attempting to explain his earlier remarks, Afolayan said his message had been misunderstood, noting that he only intended to highlight how misinformation could worsen already tense security situations.
He further revealed that insecurity had touched him personally, recounting how a close associate was recently kidnapped and only freed after a ransom was paid.
In what appears to be a response to the sustained backlash, the actor also announced his decision to step away from partisan politics.
“I’m at my lowest stage right now… I’m withdrawing from everything that has to do with politics and standing with my people,” he said, pleading for forgiveness.
The incident has continued to generate conversations online, underscoring the growing public sensitivity to issues of economic hardship and insecurity, as well as the risks public figures face when weighing in on politically charged matters.
