Coalition Targets 20m Signatures to Back Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid

A broad-based national coalition of civil society organisations, professional groups, labour unions and grassroots networks has unveiled plans to mobilise 20 million endorsements in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The initiative, being coordinated by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria, is described by organisers as one of the largest political mobilisation efforts in recent times, bringing together over 1,500 groups across different sectors of the Nigerian society.
Participants in the coalition include human rights organisations, professional bodies in the medical and legal fields, trade unions, artisan associations, community-based groups, and labour leaders, reflecting what organisers say is a wide national spread.
The coalition is expected to formally endorse President Tinubu at a convention scheduled for May 17, 2026, where representatives of the various groups will converge for what is projected to be a landmark political gathering.
According to the organisers, the event will serve as a platform to publicly declare support for the President’s second-term bid.
In addition, the coalition disclosed plans to present a compiled register of 20 million signatures gathered from Nigerians across the country, as evidence of widespread grassroots backing.
The endorsements, it said, were collected through extensive engagements spanning multiple regions, professions and social groups.
Organisers explained that the decision to support Tinubu was informed by what they described as notable progress in economic reforms, governance and efforts to stabilise the country.
They also highlighted the involvement of non-traditional actors such as artisans, market associations and labour groups as a sign of expanding political participation beyond elite circles.
“The inclusion of diverse groups across sectors shows that support for the President is not limited to political actors alone but reflects a broader national consensus,” a coalition source said.
Observers note that the scale and diversity of the coalition signal an evolving political landscape in Nigeria, where mobilisation is increasingly driven by grassroots networks and professional constituencies rather than conventional party structures alone.
As preparations intensify for the May 17 convention, attention is expected to focus on how the coalition’s activities could shape political narratives and influence voter sentiment ahead of the 2027 elections.
Organisers say further details on the convention and the breakdown of participating groups will be released in the coming days.
