The Nigeria Police Force has taken into custody one of its officers, identified as Newton Isokpehi, following a viral video in which he was heard threatening to kill anyone who attempted to record him while carrying out official duties.
The development was confirmed on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, who said disciplinary action had already commenced against the officer in line with internal regulations governing police conduct.
Authorities described the officer’s comments as unprofessional and inconsistent with the ethics and reform agenda of the Nigeria Police Force, noting that such conduct undermines public trust and ongoing efforts to improve accountability within the system.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, sparked public outrage after the officer was seen warning that individuals who filmed him during operations risked being killed. The remarks quickly drew condemnation from citizens and rights advocates, who described the statement as an abuse of authority.
The police leadership said the officer’s position was not only unacceptable but also contrary to established guidelines, including directives that permit citizens to record officers in the line of duty, provided such actions do not obstruct operations or compromise security.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had earlier reiterated that Nigerians are within their rights to document police activities in public spaces, a position that further heightened scrutiny of the officer’s conduct.
Following the backlash, Isokpehi reportedly released an apology video in which he admitted that his comments were made in anger and did not reflect the standards expected of police officers.
Police authorities said investigations are ongoing and assured that appropriate sanctions would be applied if the officer is found culpable after internal review procedures are concluded.
The Force also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening discipline and professionalism among personnel as part of broader reforms aimed at rebuilding public confidence in law enforcement.
