Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has opened up on the emotional and unusual way he experienced his side’s Premier League title triumph, describing a tense evening away from his players as the Gunners finally secured the crown following Manchester City’s slip against Bournemouth.

The decisive result, which confirmed Arsenal as champions, ended a fiercely contested season in which they had gone head-to-head with City in a tight race that went down to the final stretch—marking a long-awaited return to the summit of English football for the North London club.

Speaking after the title was sealed, Arteta explained that captain Martin Ødegaard had initially invited him and members of staff to watch the crucial Manchester City game together with the squad at the training ground after their win over Burnley.

“After the Burnley game when we won, Martin Ødegaard came to me and said, ‘Boss, we want to watch the Bournemouth vs City game tomorrow and we would like you and the staff to be there,’” Arteta said.

But the Arsenal boss admitted he changed his mind after seeing the atmosphere building among players and staff.

“We finished training around 6:30, 7:00, and I went upstairs and saw the set-up and I said, ‘I can’t do this,’” he said. “I think the boys deserved the moment and my energy, my mood, I don’t think is going to allow them to live the game in the manner they deserve.”

Arteta said he then made a last-minute decision to leave the training ground entirely, opting to watch the game alone from home as Arsenal’s fate hung in the balance.

“I went downstairs to Martin. I said, ‘Martin, I’m really sorry, but I go home. If the magic happens, I will see you after,’” he explained. “I drove home, there was already 20 minutes of the game gone.”

What followed, he said, was one of the most emotionally intense periods of his career.

“My kids and my wife were watching the game in the living room. I said good night, I just closed the door and I went straight outside and started to build some fire, build the BBQ,” he recalled. “It was the longest hour and a half of my life.”

As events unfolded on the pitch, Arsenal’s title hopes were finally confirmed by City’s result against Bournemouth, sparking celebrations across the club and among supporters who had waited since 2004 for a league triumph.

Arteta described the moment his family broke the news to him.

“My eldest son opened the garden room and started to cry and came to me and said, ‘Daddy, we are champions,’” he said. “And I did get emotional.”

He added that the celebrations quickly turned into a family moment filled with joy and relief.

“My other two kids came straight after him and my wife and we all hugged each other, and it was beautiful,” he said.

Shortly after, Arteta received a call from Ødegaard and several players, who were still at the training ground celebrating and searching for their manager.

“A minute later, I got a call from Martin and a video passing me to all the players, saying, ‘Where are you, where are you?’” he said. “I told them, don’t worry, organise something and I will be with you in the evening.”

The victory completes a significant chapter in Arsenal’s recent resurgence under Arteta, who has rebuilt the squad into consistent title contenders after years of transition.

It also adds another twist to a season defined by tight margins, with City’s earlier dominance in English football finally challenged as Arsenal held their nerve to the end.

For Arteta, however, the defining memory remains the quiet, personal moment away from the spotlight; watching history unfold from his garden rather than the touchline.
