The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has named former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.

The party said the decision followed consultations among key stakeholders and was influenced by Amaechi’s performance in the party’s presidential primary, where he emerged as runner-up, as well as his extensive experience in public service.

Announcing the development on Monday, ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a combination of experience and national reach capable of offering an alternative direction for the country.

According to him, the partnership brings together two seasoned political figures with long records in governance and public administration.

“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges,” Abdullahi said.

The party noted that Amaechi’s political career, which spans the legislative and executive arms of government, places him in a strong position to support the presidential candidate.

Amaechi previously served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State for two terms and later Minister of Transportation.

ADC said the former minister’s influence in the South-South region and other parts of Southern Nigeria would further strengthen the ticket’s appeal ahead of the election.

The party also argued that the combination of Atiku and Amaechi reflects a broad-based alliance capable of attracting support across different regions of the country.

“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket—one that bridges regions, generations and political traditions,” the statement added.

ADC expressed confidence that the ticket would galvanise support among party members, coalition partners and other stakeholders as preparations intensify for the 2027 general election.

The party subsequently called on Nigerians, particularly youths, women and civil society groups, to support its campaign efforts, expressing optimism that the alliance would strengthen its chances in the next presidential contest.
