The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has dissociated the Igbo nation from reported calls by former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, urging President Bola Tinubu to resign from office.
Ohanaeze described the comparison allegedly made by Obi between Nigeria’s political situation and recent developments in the United Kingdom, which saw Prime Minister Keir Starmer resign, as inappropriate and lacking relevant context.
The position of the group was contained in a statement issued on Monday by its factional Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa.
According to the organisation, while Obi is entitled to his personal views and freedom of expression, his remarks should not be interpreted as representing the position or political aspirations of the Igbo people.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo unequivocally disassociates the Igbo nation from the said call for the resignation of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement said.
The group maintained that Nigeria’s democratic stability requires responsible leadership and measured public discourse, especially from prominent political figures.
It urged political actors to promote dialogue, national unity and constructive engagement rather than statements capable of escalating political tension.
Ohanaeze also acknowledged ongoing federal infrastructure projects across the country, particularly in the South-East, noting that such investments remain important for economic growth and national integration.
The organisation commended the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, for his role in the execution and supervision of major road projects, which it said have contributed to improved connectivity and investor confidence in the region.
Among the projects cited were the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Badagry-Sokoto Highway corridor and other strategic transport initiatives aimed at boosting economic activities.
The group further noted what it described as improvements in some key economic indicators, including the country’s external reserves, expressing optimism that sustained reforms could strengthen macroeconomic stability and attract greater investment.
It also pointed to what it called relative improvements in security across parts of the South-East, saying the development has encouraged commercial activities and aided the gradual restoration of normal social and economic life.
Ohanaeze called for continued collaboration between the Federal Government and regional stakeholders to consolidate peace and sustain development efforts.
The organisation reaffirmed its support for initiatives that promote national cohesion, economic progress and regional stability, while urging public office holders and political leaders to demonstrate restraint and responsibility in their public engagements.
