Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have intercepted a truck loaded with military camouflage uniforms and suspected illicit drugs allegedly being transported from Lagos to the South-East, leading to the arrest of four suspects.

The interception followed an intelligence-led operation by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit along the Lekki-Epe corridor, where security operatives stopped the vehicle and recovered 47 sacks of military camouflage uniforms and 80 cartons of substances suspected to be illegal drugs.

Speaking to journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Tuesday, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, said the operation was carried out after security agencies received credible intelligence on the movement of the consignment.

According to him, the truck was heading to a destination in the South-East when it was intercepted by the tactical team.

“This was intercepted by operatives of the tactical team while it was being moved out of Lagos State. We received intelligence on the movement and immediately swung into action,” Fatai said.

He disclosed that the suspects arrested during the operation are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators in efforts to uncover the source of the items and identify other persons connected to the shipment.

“Following the intelligence, the vehicle was intercepted and those transporting the items were arrested. They are currently in our custody and investigations are ongoing,” the police commissioner added.

Fatai noted that the discovery of such a large quantity of military camouflage uniforms raises security concerns, especially given the frequent use of similar attire by criminal elements in different parts of the country.

He said investigators are working to determine the intended use of the uniforms and establish whether they were meant for criminal activities.

“Areas where we have seen these bandits, we have seen them wear these uniforms all over the place. Who knows what they want to do with this, nobody could tell. We are still investigating to get to the root of the matter for now,” he said.

The commissioner also confirmed that cartons of suspected illicit substances were found alongside the military uniforms in the truck, adding that forensic and criminal investigations are ongoing.

Police authorities said efforts are being intensified to identify those responsible for importing, distributing or financing the movement of the recovered items.

The command assured residents that it remains committed to disrupting criminal networks and preventing the movement of materials capable of threatening public safety and national security.
