The Kano State Police Command has stepped up security around the Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil and intensified patrols along the Kano–Maiduguri highway as part of efforts to curb crime and improve public safety across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, carried out a strategic security assessment of the Police Academy on Thursday before leading an operational tour of the Kano–Maiduguri Road and the Kano–Jigawa border corridor.

The move, according to the command, is in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s “Handshake Patrol” strategy aimed at strengthening inter-state security collaboration.

A statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the visit to the Nigeria Police Academy was a professional security appraisal designed to evaluate existing security arrangements and identify areas requiring reinforcement.

During the exercise, Bakori met with the Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Patrick A. Atayero, and inspected key security infrastructure within the institution.

The commissioner also assessed perimeter security, access control measures and emergency response arrangements while holding discussions with the commandant on improving intelligence sharing, joint security operations and coordinated emergency response between the academy and the Kano State Police Command.

Bakori described the Police Academy as a strategic national institution responsible for grooming future leaders of the Nigeria Police Force and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring its safety.

He commended Atayero for maintaining high standards of discipline, professionalism and internal security within the institution.

Following the assessment, the police commissioner proceeded to the Kano–Maiduguri highway and the Kano–Jigawa border axis, where he directed intensified patrols under the Inspector-General’s Handshake Patrol initiative.

The command explained that the Handshake Patrol is an intelligence-driven operational framework designed to improve cooperation between neighbouring police commands, restrict the movement of criminals across state boundaries and enhance rapid response to security threats.

During the operational tour, Bakori ordered increased surveillance and strengthened response capabilities along the strategic road corridor.

He said the enhanced patrols would be sustained and reviewed periodically based on prevailing security threats to safeguard lives and property while ensuring the uninterrupted movement of people and goods.

“The intensified patrols will be sustained and reviewed periodically based on threat analysis to guarantee the safety of lives, property and the free flow of commerce,” the commissioner said.

The command reiterated its commitment to the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, which emphasises proactive, intelligence-led, collaborative and technology-driven policing.

It also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements or objects to the nearest police formation to support ongoing efforts to strengthen security across the state.
