Group Welcomes Appointment of New JAMB Registrar, Seeks Better Staff Welfare

The August 1st Freedom Group (AFG), a body of members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Branch, has welcomed the appointment of Prof. Segun Aina as the incoming Registrar of JAMB, expressing hope that his leadership will usher in improved staff welfare and healthier industrial relations.

The group said the change in leadership presents an opportunity to address longstanding concerns affecting workers and foster a more inclusive and transparent work environment.

In a statement, the group’s Coordinator and pioneer Ex-Officio member of the NASU JAMB Branch, Comrade Chuks Madueke, described Aina’s appointment as a welcome development for many employees.

According to him, the incoming registrar’s appointment represents “light at the end of the tunnel” for staff who, he alleged, had endured years of unfavourable working conditions.

Madueke claimed that many workers operated in an atmosphere of fear, alleging that employment practices during the outgoing administration fell short of acceptable labour standards.

He alleged that employees were subjected to frequent redeployments without the accompanying allowances, irregular promotion exercises that resulted in prolonged career stagnation, and the withholding of salaries and allowances without due process.

The union member also accused the outgoing management of favouritism and nepotism, while alleging that staff welfare received inadequate attention despite what he described as significant spending on corporate social responsibility initiatives outside the organisation.

He expressed optimism that Aina’s administration would place greater emphasis on staff welfare, fairness, transparency and due process.

“We believe the incoming leadership will restore confidence among employees by promoting fairness, accountability and respect for workers’ rights,” Madueke said.

The group further expressed hope that the new management would heal divisions within the organisation and bring an end to what it described as years of victimisation, noting that some aggrieved members of staff had sought legal redress.

While wishing the outgoing Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, success in his future endeavours, Madueke said the conclusion of his 10-year tenure on July 31 offers an opportunity to reflect on his stewardship and its impact on both the institution and its workforce.

The group reaffirmed its readiness to work constructively with the incoming management, expressing confidence that JAMB would enter a new phase anchored on fairness, accountability, mutual respect and adherence to best labour practices.
