Former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Joy Nunieh

The Concerned Rivers People (CRP) has accused a former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Joy Nunieh, of holding clandestine meetings with Gabriel Pidomson and Dumo Lulu-Briggs in an alleged bid to undermine the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State.

The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by CRP Publicity Secretary, Sunny Nwagbo, who warned that alleged “backdoor politics” would not stop what the group described as the will of the people.

CRP claimed that information available to it indicated that a meeting was held at Nunieh’s residence involving Pidomson and Lulu-Briggs, allegedly to strategise against the Rainbow Coalition.

The group further alleged that another meeting was being planned at Heliconia Park Hotel, Eastern Bypass.

“Information at our disposal confirms that a meeting was held at the residence of Mrs Joy Nunieh, former Managing Director of NDDC, between Mr Gabriel Pidomson and Dumo Lulu-Briggs to strategise against the Rainbow Coalition,” the statement said.

The organisation, however, did not provide evidence to substantiate the allegations of the meetings or the purpose it attributed to them.

CRP maintained that the alleged political manoeuvring would not derail the coalition, insisting that its emergence reflected the aspirations of Rivers people.

“Let it be known, the Rainbow Coalition has come to stay. These clandestine meetings and backdoor politics will not stop the will of the people; their plans will totally fail,” the group said.

The group also took a swipe at Nunieh, recalling controversies surrounding her tenure as NDDC managing director and alleging that she had previously faced threats to her life while in office.

CRP accused the former NDDC boss of forgetting those who, according to the organisation, stood by her during what it described as a difficult period.

“It’s sad that human memory is so short when it comes to political matters,” the group said, adding that if Nunieh had forgotten the events, it would “soon uncover details and let posterity pass a verdict.”

The allegations come amid political realignments and coalition-building in Rivers State, with various political interests positioning themselves ahead of future electoral contests.

CRP, however, insisted that the alleged meetings would not weaken the Rainbow Coalition, maintaining that the group would continue to pursue its political objectives.
