Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after a battle with cancer.
His death was confirmed on Sunday by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an Instagram live session, bringing to an end the life and career of one of the most recognisable figures in the Yoruba film industry.
The development came just days after the actor’s family made an emotional public appeal for medical assistance, revealing that he had been diagnosed with stage-four cancer and needed urgent specialised care.
Ogogo’s daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, had disclosed that the seriousness of their father’s condition only became apparent to the family about three weeks before their appeal. They said his condition had deteriorated significantly and that the hospital treating him could no longer continue chemotherapy.
The family’s appeal was primarily for access to specialists and a medical facility capable of managing the actor’s condition rather than financial donations.
Kira said the family had secured a visa for Ogogo to travel to India for treatment, but his condition had become too fragile for him to fly. She appealed for recommendations of specialists and treatment centres that could provide further care.
The actor’s plight attracted assistance from Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, who was reported to have helped the family with medical bills and facilitated access to cancer specialists.
A day after the family’s appeal, reports emerged that medical intervention had been secured for Ogogo, with actress Toyosi Adesanya announcing that the actor had been admitted for treatment.
The development had followed widespread concern over the actor’s deteriorating health, including false reports of his death on social media.
On August 18, his daughter Lima dismissed the reports, describing them as false and urging members of the public to disregard them as the family continued efforts to secure treatment for the actor.
Five days later, the family confirmed that Ogogo had died.
From mechanic to Yoruba screen icon
Born in Ilaro, Ogun State, on October 31, 1959, Taiwo Hassan built a career spanning more than four decades and became one of the prominent faces of Yoruba-language cinema.
Before becoming a full-time actor, Hassan worked as an automobile mechanic and was employed by the Lagos State Water Corporation. He began his acting career in 1981 and eventually left his job at the water corporation in 1994 to devote himself fully to acting.
His career developed through theatre and film, with his commanding screen presence and versatility earning him widespread recognition among Yoruba film audiences.
Ogogo appeared in several notable productions and also established himself as a producer, director and screenwriter. His work helped cement his reputation as one of the enduring figures in the Yoruba movie industry.
His career was also marked by his association with productions that helped shape the early home-video era of Nigerian cinema, making him a familiar face to generations of viewers.
The actor’s death has left colleagues, fans and the wider Yoruba entertainment industry mourning a performer whose career spanned the transition from stage and early home videos to contemporary Nollywood.
Ogogo’s passing also comes at a time when the Nigerian film industry has continued to mourn the loss of several veteran performers, underscoring concerns about the health and welfare of ageing actors.
For more than 40 years, Taiwo Hassan remained a familiar presence on Nigerian screens, earning the nickname Ogogo that became inseparable from his identity as an actor.
His death at 66 marks the end of a career that helped define an important era of Yoruba cinema.
