Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Aminu Yusuf

The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Aminu Yusuf, has died at the age of 66, barely eight months after he was sworn in to lead the commission.

Yusuf died on Friday, although details surrounding his death were not immediately available as of press time.

Born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State, Yusuf was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in October 2025 and sworn in on December 2, 2025, as the eighth substantive chairman of the NPC.

His death comes at a time when the commission is saddled with important population-related responsibilities and national demographic planning.

Before his appointment to the NPC, Yusuf had built a political career in Niger State and served in several public positions.

He was a member of the Niger State House of Assembly and later chaired Wushishi Local Government Area. Between 2019 and 2023, he served as Special Adviser on Political Affairs to former Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello.

Yusuf also served on the board of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) between 2005 and 2007.

His academic background was largely in education and public administration. He began his formal education at LEA Primary School, Zungeru, before proceeding to Federal Government College, Odogbolu, Ogun State.

He obtained a Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from the College of Education, Minna, in 1983 and later earned a B.Sc. (Ed) in Biology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1988.

He further obtained a postgraduate diploma in Public Administration in 2001 and a master’s degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the same university in 2010.

Yusuf’s appointment as NPC chairman followed the expiration of the tenure of the previous leadership of the commission. His tenure, however, lasted less than a year before his death.

Further details on the circumstances of his death and piarrangements for his burial were not immediately available at the time of filing this report.
