Chelsea’s Unbeaten Start Ends With Narrow Arsenal Defeat

Chelsea’s perfect start to the Premier League season came to an end as Arsenal fought back to beat the Blues 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea stunned the home crowd inside two minutes when Morgan Rogers opened the scoring with a composed first-time finish from outside the box.

However, Arsenal responded before the break through Kai Havertz before Martin Odegaard completed the comeback shortly after half-time.

The defeat ended Chelsea’s 100 per cent start to the campaign, although they remain fourth in the Premier League table with three points separating them from joint leaders Arsenal and Manchester City.

Chelsea started brightly and quickly put Arsenal under pressure from a set-piece. Reece James delivered the free-kick into the box, where Maxence Lacroix won the aerial duel.

Jorrel Hato kept the move alive after Arsenal failed to clear. His header fell perfectly for Rogers, who struck first time into the bottom corner beyond David Raya.

Arsenal immediately searched for an equaliser and created problems from another set-piece. Emiliano Martinez showed courage to make a low save before diving into a crowded six-yard box to clear the danger.

The Chelsea goalkeeper took a blow to the head from Gabriel Magalhaes during the scramble but continued.

Arsenal appeared to have drawn level from another dangerous free-kick. Martinez saved from Ezri Konsa before Gabriel struck the post with the rebound.

Riccardo Calafiori then converted the loose ball, but VAR ruled Konsa offside and cancelled the goal.

Chelsea continued to defend under pressure as Arsenal increased their attacking intensity. Martinez dealt with efforts from Havertz and Bukayo Saka, while Hato produced an important challenge to keep the visitors ahead.

The pressure finally paid off for Arsenal when Havertz cut inside from the right and fired a low effort into Martinez’s near post from the edge of the box.

Chelsea almost regained the lead before half-time. Pedro Neto raced forward on the counter-attack but saw his low effort strike the base of the left post.

Both sides returned after the interval determined to find the decisive goal. Arsenal eventually moved ahead when Havertz cleverly allowed a low cross to reach Odegaard.

The Arsenal captain had enough time and space to finish from close range and put the hosts 2-1 ahead.

Chelsea refused to surrender and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro carried much of the attacking threat as the visitors tried to force Arsenal deeper.

Manager Xabi Alonso turned to his bench, introducing Malo Gusto and Pep Chavarria as Chelsea sought greater control in midfield and attack.

Arsenal still posed a threat on the counter, forcing Martinez to remain alert. The goalkeeper produced an excellent reaction save to deny Saka as Chelsea committed more players forward.

The Blues dominated much of the closing 15 minutes and pinned Arsenal inside their own half. Alonso added Estevao Willian and Danny Welbeck to increase Chelsea’s attacking options.

Yet Arsenal’s defence held firm. Estevao came close to rescuing a point but Raya produced a late fingertip save to preserve the champions’ advantage.

Chelsea therefore suffered their first defeat of the season, despite pushing the Premier League champions throughout the contest.

The result leaves the Blues fourth in the early league standings. They trail Arsenal and Manchester City by three points, with both sides maintaining their perfect records.

Chelsea will now turn their attention to the Carabao Cup. They host Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, September 9, before welcoming Hull City in the Premier League three days later.
