The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System to give every addressable building in Nigeria a unique digital location identity.
The system, unveiled nationwide through the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) on Thursday, is designed to address long-standing problems linked to inaccurate and incomplete addresses.
It is also expected to improve emergency response, security, commerce, logistics and public service delivery.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, had described the initiative as a critical layer of Nigeria’s digital public infrastructure.
The economic cost of poor addressing remains significant. The Postmaster General of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, previously put losses from misdeliveries at between N50 billion and N80 billion annually.
The problem, however, goes beyond failed deliveries. Poor location information can also complicate emergency response, security operations, financial verification, e-commerce and government planning.
Tijani captured the importance of accurate location data when he asked, “For a country to work efficiently, we need to be able to answer one very basic question. Where?”
Under the new system, each addressable building receives an 11-character alphanumeric postcode. The code identifies five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building.
The postcode belongs to the building rather than the person living or working there. This means the code remains associated with the location even when occupants change.
It also works alongside conventional addresses rather than simply replacing them. Users can search for, save and share a building’s digital postcode through NIPOST’s platform.
For businesses, the system provides a standard location reference that can support deliveries, customer verification, field operations and other services. Organisations can also integrate the postcode into their own systems.
Odeyemi has described the initiative as a framework for location intelligence, noting that reliable location data can help people, businesses and public institutions identify and connect with places more accurately.
The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has also linked the system to national security and public safety.
According to the ministry, the digital postcode can support policing, intelligence gathering, border management, emergency response, critical infrastructure protection and financial crime investigations.
The system is GIS-enabled and designed to provide a machine-readable, geographically anchored identity for addressable locations across the country.
NIPOST has made the public platform available for postcode searches, while also preparing integration options for government agencies and private organisations.
The Federal Executive Council had earlier approved the system as a component of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure.
With the nationwide launch, the government is seeking to create a common location system that can improve how Nigerians receive goods and services, while helping institutions respond more precisely to incidents and plan public interventions.
The initiative therefore extends beyond postal operations, positioning accurate location data as part of the infrastructure for Nigeria’s wider digital economy.
