Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has agreed to meet Cristiano Ronaldo as efforts intensify to resolve their reported disagreement and keep the veteran forward’s international career on track.

Portuguese publication A Bola reported that Jesus accepted a mediation proposal from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), which hopes to bring the coach and captain together.

The federation now awaits confirmation from Ronaldo on whether he will take part in the proposed discussions.

The move follows Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday after a meeting with FPF president Pedro Proença.

Ronaldo later said he would explain the circumstances behind his departure “at an appropriate moment”. However, he has not announced his retirement from international football.

A Bola said the federation wants to settle the dispute before it develops into a crisis that could bring an early end to the 41-year-old’s international career.

Proença had earlier held separate discussions with Ronaldo and Jesus at Portugal’s accommodation in Malmö on Wednesday morning.

The federation president also met both men after an earlier exchange between the coach and captain. According to A Bola, the meeting took place in a calm atmosphere.

Ronaldo nevertheless left the camp afterwards and travelled to Madrid.

Reuters reported that Jesus and Proença made a final attempt to persuade the forward to remain with the squad. Ronaldo, however, boarded a chartered aircraft and left.

The dispute reportedly began after Jesus left Ronaldo on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27.

Ronaldo took part in the second-half warm-up but did not enter the game. Jesus acknowledged that the captain was unhappy with the decision, although he initially played down reports of a serious disagreement.

Ronaldo then missed Portugal’s squad for Thursday’s 4-2 victory over Denmark.

João Cancelo, Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha and João Félix scored for Jesus’ side as Portugal secured the win without their long-serving captain.

After the Denmark match, Jesus sought to draw a line under the controversy.

He described the Ronaldo situation as “a resolved matter” for now, while stressing that his attention remained on Portugal’s campaign.

The proposed meeting could now determine whether Ronaldo returns to the national team under Jesus or whether the dispute develops into a deeper break between the captain and coach.
