Armed bandits have killed an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and set his body ablaze after attacking a surveillance team in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The officer, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I (ASI I), Ibrahim Usman Babagiwa, died during the attack on October 6, 2026, along the Tungan Taya–Woko axis.

Babagiwa and an Inspector of Immigration were conducting a surveillance operation when armed men attacked them at Woko village. The assailants killed Babagiwa, while the second officer sustained machete injuries but escaped.

The Niger State Command of the NIS said the injured officer was stable and responding to treatment.

Security personnel discovered Babagiwa’s burnt remains two days after the attack. Authorities have since buried him according to Islamic rites.

The command confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, DSI Muktar Abubakar, on behalf of the Comptroller of Immigration Service in Niger State.

The Niger State Police Command also confirmed the attack.

Despite the killing, the immigration service pledged to sustain its operations against irregular migration and other security threats along the country’s international borders.

The command maintained that the incident would not deter its personnel from carrying out their statutory duties, despite the security challenges in the area.
