The Rivers State Police Command has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and another officer following allegations that suspected cultists renovated a police outpost and celebrated the project at the facility.
The suspected cultists reportedly visited the Abuloma Police Outpost on Thursday, October 15, after completing the renovation. A video circulating on social media showed the group celebrating at the facility.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 16, the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, confirmed that the police had taken notice of the reports and ordered a full investigation into the incident.
The Command also queried the affected officers and relieved them of their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga A. Adepoju, directed investigators to establish the identities and backgrounds of the individuals or groups that financed or facilitated the renovation.
Investigators will also determine which officers authorised the project, whether they followed the required procedures and whether any personnel breached professional standards or compromised the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Command condemned any action or association that could undermine police discipline, integrity and professionalism.
It warned that police facilities serve the public and must not become platforms for criminal groups to gain recognition, influence or public acceptance.
The police also maintained that the Command would not tolerate criminality or conduct capable of eroding public confidence in the Force.
However, the Command acknowledged that communities could legitimately contribute to improving police facilities. It stressed that such support must comply with established legal and administrative procedures without compromising police independence, security or professional standards.
The statement cited Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.
It clarified that donations or other forms of assistance would not shield anyone from investigation or prosecution.
The Command further warned that officers found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action, while investigators could recommend legal proceedings where the evidence and applicable laws warranted them.
It also reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, the protection of lives and property, and the fight against cultism and organised crime across Rivers State.
The police urged residents to remain calm and provide credible, timely information to security agencies to help maintain peace and tackle criminal activities.
The Command also provided contact details for its Complaint Response Unit for members of the public who wish to lodge complaints or submit relevant information.
Police authorities said the investigation would establish the extent of any personnel’s involvement and determine whether officials conducted the necessary background checks on those who financed or facilitated the renovation.
The outcome is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the project and whether any police personnel violated established rules or procedures.
