Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a fourth presidential term after defeating his right-wing challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, who has vowed to challenge the election result.
Official figures released by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court showed Lula winning 51.79 per cent of the valid votes, against Bolsonaro’s 48.21 per cent.
Bolsonaro rejected the outcome and announced plans to seek the annulment of the election, raising fresh concerns over political tensions in the South American country.
His challenge centres partly on a decision to extend voting hours by two hours in some areas following reports of transport disruptions and heavy rainfall.
Both candidates had requested additional voting time. However, Bolsonaro later condemned the decision, describing it as unacceptable.
The head of Brazil’s electoral court, however, maintained that the extension did not affect the final outcome.
Lula celebrated his victory with supporters in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where he credited voters with turning out to defend democracy.
The 80-year-old leader is expected to begin his new term on January 5, 2027, amid mounting concerns over the cost of living, rising crime and deep political divisions.
In his victory remarks, Lula also pledged to protect Brazil’s national independence and resist any attempt to subordinate the country to foreign interests.
He declared that Brazil would not accept being treated as another nation’s “backyard”, signalling his intention to pursue an independent foreign policy.
The narrow margin of victory, coupled with Bolsonaro’s determination to contest the result, could deepen political divisions as the country prepares for another Lula administration.
