Super Eagles goalkeeper Uzoho keeps clean sheet in his first league start in 204 days
Francis Uzoho kept his first clean sheet in his first league start in 204 days in Omonia Nicosia’s 2-0 win over Nea Salamis Famagusta FC on matchday 14 of the Cypriot First Divison played at the Ammochostos Stadium on Sunday.
Cape Verde forward Willy Semedo gave Omonia the lead in the 48th minute with a precise header from Loizos Loizou’s pass.
Victor Fernandez had the chance to restore parity for Nea Salamis, the home side in the 57th minute but was denied by Uzoho.
Loannis Kousoulos doubled the away side’s lead in the 68th minute with a strong volley after Roman Bezus headed the ball to him.
In the 93rd minute, Uzoho made a last-gasp save on the goal line to prevent Fernandez from pulling one back for Nea Salamis.
Today was the first game the Nigeria international started for Omonia Nicosia in the Cypriot First Division this season and also in all competitions with his other appearance being as a substitute in a league fixture last month.
Brazilian shot-stopper Fabiano is the first choice of the 21-time Cypriot champions and Uzoho had to replace him in today’s game due to a knee injury.
The position of the 25-year-old in the Super Eagles is also uncertain heading into the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
