AFCON 2023 : Nigerian referees missing as CAF unveils list of 68 match officials
The anticipation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast is building, and CAF has recently released the official list of match officials for the prestigious tournament, set to begin from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
The match officials include 26 center referees, 30 assistant referees, and 12 VAR officials.
Unfortunately, no Nigerian referee has secured a spot on the list. Host nation Cote d’Ivoire boasts of three representatives, while Morocco and Algeria lead the pack with seven referees each, showcasing their strong presence in the officiating team.
Notable inclusions are the two referees from Rwanda, Uwikunda Samuel and Mukansanga Salma, contributing to the continental diversity of match officials. Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea, recognized for his expertise, will serve as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR), bringing his skills to the technological aspects of officiating.
One of the highlights is the selection of top Zambian female FIFA referee Diana Chikotesha, adding a trailblazing presence to the officiating team. Her inclusion underscores the commitment to gender diversity and the recognition of outstanding referees, regardless of gender.
