Don’t dissolve Kano emirates, APC chieftain warns Gov Yusuf

A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhajj Alhassan Yaryasa, has warned Governor Abba Yusuf against considering any move to dissolve the newly created emirates in the state.

The emirates were established during the tenure of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who also removed the then Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, and replaced him with Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.

Following the victory of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 governorship election, former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, a political godfather to Governor Abba Yusuf, had promised to reverse Ganduje’s decision and revert the Kano Emirate to its original structure.

Alhajj Yaryasa, the Coordinator of the Tinubu Campaign Organisation for Kano South, cautioned Governor Yusuf against succumbing to the pressure to dismantle the emirates.

He argued that such a move could lead to unrest and resistance from the people of the emirates, emphasizing the need for peace in the state.

Expressing concern over external influences, Yaryasa accused certain individuals of pressuring the governor to cause discord between the government and the emirate communities.

He urged Governor Yusuf to prioritize the state’s interests over personal and political considerations.

Yaryasa highlighted the potential political repercussions of dissolving the emirates, stating that it could negatively impact the governor’s popularity.

He emphasized that traditional rulers are not akin to political appointees, and any attempt to remove them should be based on serious offenses.

Calling for the intervention of respected elders in the state, Yaryasa urged them to advise the governor against any plans to tamper with the newly established emirates.

Additionally, he advocated for legislation that would prevent politicians from meddling in the affairs of traditional institutions, underscoring the importance of preserving the sanctity of these institutions in society.

“There is an urgent need for elders in the state to advise the governor against succumbing to any pressure on the new emirates because it will not augur well for the state.

“There should be a law that would prevent politicians, especially governors and other elected political officeholders from meddling in the affairs of traditional institutions in the country.

“Politicians should respect traditional institutions, otherwise it will be rendered useless in the eyes of the society,” the APC chieftain said. (PUNCH)

  1. I bet this same chieftain was mute when the immediate past governor did his removal and installment of the emirates; now, because it’s NNPP, it’s suddenly wrong. Politicians!
