Ex-Minister Amaechi to leave APC, may quit partisan politics

Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi is set to dump the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a credible source informed revealed on Sunday.

However, rather than return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or join the Labour Party (LP), the former Minister of Transportation during President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure may have decided to quit partisan politics.

” He was motivated to join APC in August 2013 because he believed in Muhammadu Buhari’s leadership. With the former President now taking a deserved rest from politics, Amaechi sees no reason for his continued stay in the party” our source said.

The relationship between Amaechi and President Bola Tinubu has been sour even before the presidential primary of the party which was held in June 2022. Amaechi came second in the primary with 316 votes while Tinubu won with 1,271 votes.

Throughout the electioneering campaign, Tinubu shunned Amaechi and worked with his rival, Nyesom Wike who was the then governor of Rivers State and now Minister of FCT in the Tinubu administration.

For his support, Tinubu rewarded Wike, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with the ministerial slot of Rivers, while neglecting Rivers APC, which Amaechi heads.

Our source said though he still claimed to be in PDP, the structure of Rivers APC is technically in the hands of Wike as Amaechi has been relegated to the background.

Despite his frolicking and open endorsement of the APC, the PDP leadership has failed to take any action against Wike who publicly dared the party to suspend him.

It was also gathered that Wike is waiting for his expulsion from the PDP before making a formal declaration for the ruling APC.

Speaking recently on the quality of leadership in the country, Amaechi said: “Nigerians get what they want, what they deserve. You don’t complain after. You don’t. Nigerians at all times have had opportunities to vote. So, whatever you voted for is what you deserve”.
