Lagos State moves to relocate Computer Village, Katangowa market soon

In its bid to bring more sanity to the environment, Lagos State Government said it has resolved to reorganise markets in the state to address traffic congestion caused by vendors obstructing roads.

This was recently disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Babatunde, during a joint inspection and enforcement exercise carried out by Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) in conjunction with some law enforcement agencies and other relevant government agencies in charge of emergency related matters at Mandilas market on Lagos Island.

During the exercise which was led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Babatunde; his colleague in charge of Central Business District, Bola Olumegbon-Lawal; the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Nurudeen Sodehinde: and the General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, the market was immediately closed for two days (Saturday and Sunday) to enable marketers to comply with its directive for the removal of illegal make-shift structures erected on road setbacks within and around the market.

According to the directive, failure by the market to adhere to the order will force the government to take a comprehensive action in addition to the defaulters paying for the demolition exercise.

Some illegal structures attached to main buildings were dismantled, including industrial generators mounted on buildings.

The enforcement exercise followed the expiration of the 14-day self-removal notice earlier given by the state government to the traders to remove their wares and shops from the roads, especially on Tawaliu Bello Street, around Mandalas on Lagos Island.
