Algerian FAF crashes Jose Peseiro links, appoints Vladimir Petkovic

The Algerian Football Federation have confirmed the appointment of Vladimir Petkovic, ending speculations linking Super Eagles boss Jose Peseiro.

Following Algeria’s poor outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations that saw them exit the competition in the group stage after picking just two points from their three games, Djamel Belmadi parted ways with the team.

After his sack, there were talks linking former Super Eagles boss Peseiro to the Algerian job, as the Portuguese tactician led Nigeria to a second-place finish. Peseiro’s contract is set to expire at the end of February but he has not penned a new deal with the NFF.

However, all of those talks have now been put to bed, as the Algerian FA have announced the appointment of Petkovic as the new national team coach.

He will take charge of the team over the next few months and try to stabilize the situation after their abysmal performances at the last two AFCONs.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation have not confirmed a new coach for the Super Eagles yet. But Petkovic’s appointment means that Peseiro has one less suitor.

Still, the NFF have to move fast if they want to retain Peseiro as coach. The former Venezuela manager has gained the trust of Nigerian fans after a strong performance at the AFCON. The NFF may have to increase Peseiro’s wages before he agrees to a new deal.
