Bankole advocates political inclusion of PWDs in LG administration
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), Aare Hon Tolu Bankole, has called on the government to ensure the political inclusion of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the upcoming local government elections and administration across the country.
In a statement personally signed by Bankole on Friday, he emphasized that the inclusion of PWDs is not only a matter of justice and equality but also a crucial step towards enriching democratic processes and governance structures.
He cited the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which mandates the protection and inclusion of PWDs in all spheres of public life, including political participation.
The APC leader highlighted the benefits of including PWDs in politics, including providing diverse perspectives, promoting social cohesion, and enhancing policy outcomes. “When PWDs are involved in decision-making processes, policies and programs are more likely to address the diverse needs of all citizens,” he said.
Bankole urged governors to take proactive steps to ensure that PWDs are not only included but actively encouraged to participate in the upcoming local government elections.
“I urge your Excellencies to take proactive steps to ensure that PWDs are not only included but actively encouraged to participate in the upcoming local government elections. This can be achieved through your overt support to PWD candidates, mentorship and appointment into leadership positions.
In light of planned nationwide protests over economic hardship ravaging the country, Bankole called for restraint and peaceful dialogue. “While it is crucial to express our grievances and demand accountability, it is equally important to ensure that our actions do not escalate into violence or unrest,” he said.
The APC leader expressed confidence that governors can set a powerful example by contributing significantly to the realization of an inclusive and equitable political landscape in Nigeria. This would also uphold the rights and dignity of PWDs.
