FG to evacuate Nigerians in Lebanon over Israel-Hezbollah conflict

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to evacuate its citizens from Lebanon amidst the escalating Israel-Hezbollah conflict. This decision comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerian nationals in the affected region.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Eche Abu-Obe.

Obe noted that; “The deteriorating security situation in Lebanon necessitates immediate action. The Federal Government is fully committed to the protection and safety of all Nigerians abroad, especially in conflict zones.”

In a series of advisories issued by the Nigerian Embassy in Lebanon, nationals were urged to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety. The embassy has been proactive in providing regular updates and safety instructions to the Nigerian community, with particular emphasis on the potential risks associated with staying in affected areas.

“In August 2024, we advised Nigerian nationals to strongly consider voluntary evacuation while commercial flight options remained available,” Amb. Abu-Obe explained.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Nigerian government has already facilitated the evacuation of citizens from southern Lebanon to safer locations, specifically Beirut. This operation has been carried out in collaboration with community leaders, highlighting the government’s commitment to a swift and organized response. “To date, we are grateful to report that no Nigerian lives have been lost since the onset of this conflict,” the spokesperson noted.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that the Federal Government is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders to finalize the plans for the evacuation. “We are making all necessary preparations to bring our citizens back home safely. The welfare of Nigerians is our top priority,” Amb. Abu-Obe emphasized.

As tensions in the region continue to mount, the Nigerian government remains vigilant and prepared to respond as necessary, ensuring that all measures are taken to protect and support its citizens abroad.
