INEC Refutes Claims of Blocking Parties from Accessing Election Materials in Edo
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has categorically rejected allegations that it has withheld access to Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices and other essential election materials from political parties in Edo State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, in a statement labeled these claims as “baseless, misleading, and completely devoid of truth,” emphasizing INEC’s unwavering commitment to transparency in electoral processes.
“The inspection of election materials is a fundamental right of all parties involved in election petitions. We are mandated by law to facilitate this process, and there has been no obstruction from my office or any official under my leadership,” Dr. Onuoha stated.
Dismissing the allegations, he further confirmed that no political party or its representatives had ever been denied access to inspect the necessary materials.
The Edo REC reassured stakeholders that INEC understands its legal obligations regarding this inspection process and is fully committed to assisting judicial proceedings for those seeking redress.
As part of INEC’s pledge to ensure transparency, Dr. Onuoha announced a formal schedule for inspecting election materials, set for October 9, 2024, at 10:00 AM, at the INEC Headquarters in Edo State.
“All political parties and their representatives are invited to participate in this exercise, as per the legal procedures, to ensure transparency and adherence to the rule of law.
“Any party or candidate seeking to inspect these materials has been and will continue to be granted access, provided they follow the proper procedures,” he noted.
Onuoha expressed disappointment over the circulating allegations, urging stakeholders and the public to disregard what he termed “unfortunate” misinformation lacking substantial evidence.
“In our role, we remain loyal to the Nigerian people, the Constitution, and the rule of law,” He pledged, asserting that INEC’s operations are guided by the principles of transparency, fairness, and accountability.
He also encouraged any political party interested in engaging with his office to follow the appropriate legal channels, promising full cooperation in the inspection of election materials.
