Another terrorist group emerges in the North

The Sokoto State Government has issued a warning about the emergence of a new terrorist group in the area known as LAKURAWAS.

During a meeting with participants from Course 33 of the National Defence College, Abuja, State Deputy Governor Idris Gobir disclosed this information while they were on a study visit to Sokoto.

Gobir noted that the group operates under a religious ideology and is armed with sophisticated weapons.

“Our assessment indicates that LAKURAWAS is active in approximately five local government areas throughout the state,” he stated.

He expressed concern over this situation, particularly as the state is already facing significant issues with banditry. “The threat is growing,” he remarked, adding that security agencies are working hard to address this new challenge.

The Deputy Governor highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the state and federal security forces to protect lives and property. He also pointed out the various measures the state government has taken to tackle these security issues, expressing hope that insights gained from the National Defence College’s study tour would aid authorities in understanding the evolving threats and developing effective strategies for maintaining peace.

Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda, who led the visiting delegation, provided context on the college, established in 1992 as Nigeria’s leading military institution. He mentioned that the college trains military, police, and strategic agency officers for high-level responsibilities, with a total of 2,982 graduates, including participants from 30 African and Asian countries.

At the end of the tour, Dauda indicated that the delegation would compile an oral and written report outlining their observations and recommendations for enhancing security in the state.
