JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has disclosed her ambitious plans to enhance the country’s foreign policy after she was officially sworn in as Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs  by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Addressing newsmen as she assumed duties at the Ministry, Ojukwu emphasized her commitment to leveraging the potential of Nigerians both domestically and abroad. “In this ministry, we would be keying into the four tenets of the foreign policy thrust of the president: promoting democracies, strengthening democratic institutions around the African continent, fostering development through the African Continental Free Trade Area, and optimizing Nigeria’s demographic advantages,” she stated.

Ojukwu highlighted Nigeria’s youthful population, noting, “As you all know, 70% of our population is under the age of 43. That’s a huge demographic, and we fully intend to harness their immense potential to ensure that our country benefits from their creative talents, skills, and vibrant energy.”

One of the focal points of her strategy includes engaging with the Nigerian diaspora. “Most importantly, we intend to key into the president’s initiatives regarding the diaspora. The diaspora remains a vital asset, with an economic contribution of approximately $22 billion. Imagine what we can achieve if we leverage their economy and the foreign direct investment they can generate,” Ojukwu remarked.

The newly minted minister also stressed the importance of reinforcing Nigeria’s diplomatic ties around the world. She assured Nigerians that her tenure would focus on fostering sustainable international relationships while addressing issues crucial to Nigeria’s global interests.

“This Ministry has dedicated officers who are committed to advancing our foreign interests. I have seen firsthand their efforts to support our citizens abroad, often with limited resources,” she said.

Ojukwu addressed the operational efficiency of Nigeria’s embassies, stating, “It’s vital that our missions abroad provide seamless services and assistance to our citizens in distress. This aligns with the President’s foreign policy objectives, and together, we can lift our country out of its current challenges.”

Ojukwu was welcomed warmly at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, along with the Permanent Secretary and senior management staff.

As former Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Affairs and with experience as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ghana and Spain, Ojukwu is poised to bring her extensive knowledge and expertise into her new role, as she embarks on this pivotal chapter of Nigeria’s foreign relations.
