INEC Chairman inspects Ondo facilities ahead of governorship election, promises enhanced logistics, security

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

As Ondo State gears up for its governorship election on November 16, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, conducted a thorough inspection of the Commission’s offices in the Akure North and Akure South Local Government Areas on Tuesday.

His visit was part of a week-long evaluation aimed at ensuring all necessary preparations are in place for a smooth electoral process.

Following the inspection, Prof. Yakubu expressed his satisfaction with the level of readiness observed at the local offices, stating, “We very rarely achieve this level of preparation ahead of an election. We’ve inspected kit bags, cross-checked essential materials, and confirmed that everything needed at this stage is in place.”

The Chairman confirmed that while essential items had arrived in the state, sensitive materials such as ballot papers and result sheets are expected to arrive the following day for inspection with key stakeholders, including representatives from political parties, accreditation observers, and members of the media.

Prof. Yakubu outlined a targeted schedule leading up to the election, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability.

“We will commence movement to the Local Government Areas on Thursday, starting with the furthest locations and concluding with Akure South.

“Materials will then be allocated to the wards and Registration Area Centers (RACs) on Friday, ensuring polling units are primed for activation on Saturday morning,” he explained.

Acknowledging past lessons learned, especially regarding logistics and result management, the INEC Chairman stated, “Every election is a learning curve for INEC. Nigerians have been asking for improvements in logistics and transparency in result management, and we have made these priorities.” He assured the public of noticeable advancements in these crucial areas for the upcoming election.

Addressing the specific logistical challenges faced by riverine local governments like Ese-Odo and Ilaje, Prof. Yakubu emphasized improved measures for safeguarding sensitive materials.

“We have learned from past experiences, and sensitive materials will be wrapped in polythene for protection. This way, if there’s an incident on the water, materials will float and can be retrieved,” he detailed.

On the issue of security, he stressed the Commission’s commitment to the safety of both electoral officials and security personnel. “In riverine areas, all officials will be equipped with life vests,” he affirmed, highlighting INEC’s ongoing dedication to conducting secure elections across Ondo State.

Following the readiness inspection, the INEC Chairman convened a meeting with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), Ondo State Chapter, to discuss strategies for ensuring a peaceful electoral environment.
