IDPD 2024: Tolu Bankole Advocates Empowerment, Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 2024, the National Leader for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aare Hon. Tolu Bankole, has emphasized the urgent need for increased leadership opportunities and inclusive practices for individuals living with disabilities in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by Bankole on Tuesday, he stated that this year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” served as a rallying cry for advocates of disability rights.
The APC Stalwart highlighted the importance of integration and representation of PWDs in all sectors of society.
“Governments and organizations must create pathways for PWDs to assume leadership roles in public and private sectors. Amplifying their voices in decision-making processes ensures that policies reflect their needs and aspirations.
“Targeted programs should be introduced to enhance the economic inclusion of PWDs. These initiatives should include access to entrepreneurship opportunities, skills development, and employment tailored to their unique capabilities,” he said.
Reflecting on the progress made in recent years, Bankole pointed to the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018 as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s journey towards disability inclusion.
“While several states have domesticated this act, I urge the remaining states to urgently adopt and implement this critical legislation to uphold the rights of all PWDs. It is essential that no Nigerian with a disability is left behind,” he urged.
Bankole commended the APC-led Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for its ongoing commitment to policies aimed at enhancing the quality of life for PWDs.
He said, “The APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has continued to champion policies that prioritize inclusion and accessibility. Through initiatives that promote social protection, employment opportunities, and accessibility in public infrastructure, the government has shown dedication to empowering PWDs.
“Similarly, the APC National Working Committee (NWC), under the leadership of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has made inclusion a core focus. The establishment of structures that ensure representation and active participation of PWDs within the party highlights the APC’s commitment to inclusive leadership.”
Despite these advancements, the challenges faced by PWDs remain stark. Bankole pointed out that ongoing economic difficulties have disproportionately impacted the disabled community.
“The prevailing economic challenges in the country have disproportionately impacted PWDs, many of whom face barriers to employment and social services. Rising costs of living and limited access to economic opportunities exacerbate the vulnerabilities of this group.
“As we strive for a sustainable future, it is essential to prioritize interventions that address these disparities, ensuring that PWDs can access the resources and opportunities needed to thrive,” he stated.
As part of efforts to alleviate the challenges faced by persons with disabilities, Bankole noted how he has personally initiated and implemented structured social welfare programs aimed at improving the quality of life of PWDs.
“Through grants, scholarships for PWD students and children of PWDs, medical interventions, and other targeted support initiatives, I have sought to provide tangible solutions to the daily struggles faced by many in this community.
“These programs not only alleviate immediate needs but also empower PWDs and their families to pursue education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, fostering long-term inclusion and independence,” he said.
In a passionate appeal for action, Bankole laid out several key recommendations for local and national government leaders, as well as private sector stakeholders.
“Comprehensive audits and modifications to public infrastructure are necessary to ensure accessibility for all.
“Efforts to combat stigma and discrimination must be intensified. Public awareness campaigns and education programs can foster understanding and acceptance of PWDs,” he urged.
Bankole concluded by reiterating the APC’s unwavering commitment to the empowerment of persons with disabilities and calls on all stakeholders to join hands in creating a future where everyone, regardless of ability, can lead and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development.
