FG Renames UniAbuja To Yakubu Gowon University

The Federal Government has renamed the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University.
Minister of Information Mohammed Idris revealed the decision to State House correspondents on Monday, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
The renaming is in honour of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday.
Idris said the proposal would be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval.
He said, “The third item is that the Federal Assisted Council also decided to rename the University of Abuja to honour elder statesman General Yakubu Gowon.
“The University of Abuja will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University. Of course, the processing will have to go to the National Assembly for all legislation in that direction.
“But FEC has decided to write to the national assembly to change the name of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honour of the former head of state and elder statesman.”
