Nigeria Denies Alleged Plot to Destabilize Niger Republic Government

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Government of Nigeria has refuted allegations made by the Nigerien authorities regarding the involvement of Nigerian security forces in the recent attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline.

The attack, attributed to the Lakurawa terrorist group, occurred on December 13, 2024, in Gaya, located in the Dosso Region of Niger Republic.

In a statement issued on Saturday, acting Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, conveyed Nigeria’s condolences to the Government of Niger for the “unfortunate attack on the oil pipeline,” while firmly stating that “the perpetrators were neither backed nor assisted by Nigerian authorities.”

This assertion highlighted  Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and its clear stance against supporting any terrorist activities.

Furthermore, the Nigerian government expressed serious concerns regarding allegations of French military presence in northern Nigeria, purportedly preparing to destabilize Niger’s government. Ebienfa therefore stated, “These allegations are unfounded and should be discarded in their entirety.”

Highlighting the historical relationship between Nigeria and France, the spokesperson emphasized that it has always been characterized by mutual respect, dignity, and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

“It is important to state that the relationship between Nigeria and France has always been cordial, and it is guided by mutual respect, dignity, and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs. Nigeria will continue to explore all peaceful means to maintain its cordial relationship with the Republic of Niger for the benefit of the people of both countries,” Ebienfa said.

The statement concluded with Nigeria’s commitment to exploring all peaceful avenues to maintain its cordial relationship with the Republic of Niger for the benefit of both nations.

The strong rebuttal comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, as both countries navigate the complexities of security and cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
