INEC Yet to Take Final Decision on Delineation of Ward in Warri

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has addressed recent misconceptions surrounding the proposed delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency, following a Supreme Court verdict delivered on December 2, 2022.

This was disclosed in a statement signed on Thursday, by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.

Olumekun noted  that the narratives circulating about the delineation process are misleading.

“Our attention has been drawn to the misleading narratives about the proposed delineation of Wards in Warri North, Warri South, and Warri South West Federal Constituency as ordered by the Supreme Court,” he stated.

Olumekun added that  following the Supreme Court’s judgment, the Commission initiated extensive consultations from February 2023 to July 2024, engaging with critical stakeholders and conducting fieldwork across all communities within the three local government areas.

This effort, he said, culminated in the production of a draft report, which was presented to stakeholders during a recent consultation held on April 4, 2025.

“The purpose of this consultation was to give stakeholders the opportunity to raise any concerns they might have. The overall objective was to arrive at an amicable agreement endorsed by all the parties involved,” Olumekun explained.

He further clarified that, contrary to ongoing speculations, the Commission has not yet made a final decision regarding the delineation of wards in the Warri Federal Constituency.

“We urge representatives of the various stakeholders to submit their observations on the draft report, which will serve as the basis for further engagement on the matter,” he added.

In light of the ongoing discussions, Olumekun appealed to all stakeholders in the constituency to refrain from any activities that could jeopardize the peace and security of the area.

“The Commission will continue to operate based on fairness, equity, the rule of law, and in full consultation with all stakeholders,” he affirmed.
