Diplomatic Visit: Nigeria, Niger Forge Stronger Ties in Trade, Security
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

In a bid to forge stronger ties in trade, agriculture, and security, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, concluded an official working visit to Niger, where he engaged in discussions with his Nigerien counterpart, Bakary Yaou Sangaré.
According to a communique jointly signed by the duo on Wednesday, the visit, marked by a spirit of brotherhood and cooperation, aimed to address mutual challenges and enhance collaboration between the two nations.
Ambassador Tuggar was warmly welcomed by Minister Yaou in Niamey, reflecting the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries.
“Our discussions today have reaffirmed the deep ties that bind our countries. We are committed to revitalizing the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC) to ensure that our cooperation translates into tangible benefits for our peoples,” the communique read.
The two ministers engaged in a comprehensive dialogue that covered a range of issues, including the operationalization of cross-border markets, energy projects, and infrastructure development.
They emphasized the importance of initiatives such as the Kano-Katsina-Jibiya-Maradi railway and the construction of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline.
“These projects are not just about connectivity; they are about fostering economic growth and improving the livelihoods of our citizens,” The Ministers added.
On the security front, both ministers acknowledged the pressing threat of terrorism along their shared border, which hampers development efforts.
“We must enhance our security cooperation to effectively combat these challenges. Our nations’ stability is crucial for the successful implementation of our development programs,” they noted.
The discussions also highlighted the need for increased social, political, and cultural exchanges. The ministers agreed to establish a Joint Consultative Forum to bring together stakeholders from both countries to tackle common challenges and explore new opportunities.
