At least 20 soldiers have been killed in a devastating early morning attack by armed bandits on Nigerian military camp near Bangi in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
Besides the 20 soldiers killed, several others were injured.
According to security sources, the assailants launched a surprise assault at dawn, engaging soldiers in a fierce gun battle before eventually overrunning the camp.
“We tried so much to repel the attacks and after more than three hours of gun duel, they overpowered us, killing our commanding officer, a lieutenant colonel,” a soldier recounted, declining to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
The Nigerian Army is yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
Residents in the area are reportedly fleeing, fearing more attacks as insecurity worsens in parts of Niger State.
