FCT Workers Demand Sack of Emeka Ezeh over Unpaid Salaries

ESTHER SALIFU, Abuja

Workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are calling for the removal of FCT Civil Service Commission Chairman, Emeka Ezeh, due to unpaid salaries and other grievances.

The Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) has been leading the protests, with workers demanding better working conditions and payment of salary arrears.

The three-day protest, which started on Monday, June 30, 2025, is aimed at pressing the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to address the workers’ concerns. The protesters, including health workers and teachers, have shut down the Minister’s office, preventing workers from gaining entry or exit.

Part of the workers’ grievances, include; unpaid salaries, discrepancies in salary payments, hazard allowance arrears for health workers, stoppage of salaries without due process, lack of overhead costs forcing them to buy office supplies, and a prolonged strike by primary school teachers with over 100 days of unpaid salaries.

The workers are also demanding structural changes, improved staff welfare, payment of wage awards, promotion of staff, and an end to National Housing Fund deductions.

JUAC President, Rifkatu Iortyer, expressed frustration over the administration’s failure to address the workers’ concerns, stating, “We cannot work when overhead is not released.” She also lamented the stoppage of workers’ salaries, describing it as an “unfair initiative.”

Trade Union Congress FCT Chapter Chairman, Audu Akogwu, declared support for the protesters, calling non-participating workers “saboteurs” and “betrayers.” He urged the Minister to intervene and address the workers’ grievances, warning that the union will mobilize affiliates to shut down all FCT offices if demands are not met .
