NiMet Alerts Nigerians to Brace up for 3-Day Widespread Thunderstorm, Rain

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather outlook warning Nigerians to brace for widespread thunderstorms and rain over the next three days, from Thursday, July 3, to Saturday, July 5, 2025.

The forecast, which was issued by the NiMet’s Central Forecast Office on Wednesday, indicated varying weather conditions across the northern, central, and southern regions of the country.

On Thursday, July 3, the Northern Region is expected to experience sunny skies with patches of clouds, along with early morning thunderstorms and moderate rains in parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Taraba states.

“Later during the afternoon/evening hours, these rains with thunderstorms are expected to continue over this region,” NiMet said.

In the Central Region, light to moderate intermittent rains are anticipated over parts of Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger states during the morning.

The agency noted, “Later in the afternoon/evening, thunderstorms with continuous rains are anticipated to continue over this region.”

Meanwhile, the Southern Region will see cloudy skies with prospects of morning intermittent rains over parts of Cross River, Rivers, Lagos, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Osun, Oyo, Ondo, and Ekiti states.

NiMet added, “Later during the afternoon/evening hours, continuous rain showers are expected over parts of this region.”

On Friday, July 4, the Northern Region will experience morning thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kano, and Katsina states.

“Later in the afternoon/evening hours, widespread thunderstorms with rain showers are expected to continue over this region,” NiMet forecast.

In the Central Region, light rains are expected in the morning over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Benue states.

The agency indicated, “Cloudy skies are expected with prospects of thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory during the afternoon/evening hours.”

The Southern Region will see intermittent light rains in the morning over parts of Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.

“Continuous light to moderate rains are expected over this region during the afternoon/evening hours,” NiMet stated.

On Saturday, July 5, the Northern Region will have morning thunderstorms with continuous light rains over parts of Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, and Sokoto states, while the rest of the region will be sunny with cloud patches.

“Widespread thunderstorms with light to moderate rains are expected over parts of this region during the afternoon/evening periods,” NiMet stated.

In the Central Region, cloudy skies with sunshine intervals are expected in the morning, with chances of light rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Kwara, and Niger states.

“Thunderstorms with light to moderate rains are expected over parts of this region during the afternoon/evening periods,” the outlook revealed.

The Southern Region will experience cloudy skies with chances of morning intermittent rains over parts of Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Edo, and Lagos states.

NiMet concluded, “Moderate to heavy rains are expected over the Southern region during the afternoon/evening periods.”

Consequently, NiMet advised the public to take necessary precautions as strong winds may precede thunderstorms. Residents are urged to secure loose objects to prevent collisions, avoid driving during heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances from sockets, and stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches.

“Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.

“Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates from NiMet. Visit our website www.nimet.gov.ng,” the Agency advised.
