Nigeria Urges US to Reconsider 3-Month Single Entry Visa Policy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its concerns regarding the recent decision by the United States to implement a three-month single entry visa policy for Nigerian citizens.

This new visa reciprocity schedule affects various non-immigrant visa categories, including B1/B2, F, and J visas, and has raised apprehension among Nigerian officials.

In a statement signed on Wednesday, by the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government emphasized that this decision is misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should govern the relationship between the two nations.

“The Federal Government views this development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between our two countries,” the statement read.

The Nigerian government highlighted that the new restrictions disproportionately impact various groups, including travelers, students pursuing academic opportunities, professionals engaged in legitimate business, and families wishing to visit loved ones.

“This decision places a disproportionate burden on Nigerian travellers, students seeking academic opportunities, professionals engaging in legitimate business, families visiting loved ones and individuals contributing to cultural and educational exchanges,” Ebienfa said.

While acknowledging the United States’ sovereign right to establish its immigration policies, Nigeria urged the US to reconsider this decision.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to diplomatic engagement, stating, “Nigeria respectfully urges the United States to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities.”

The statement concluded by affirming that ongoing diplomatic efforts aim to reach a resolution that reflects fairness and upholds the values of mutual interest.
