JOEL OLADELE, Abuja
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that 69,376 Nigerians successfully completed online pre-registration of voters within the first seven hours of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which commenced on Monday, 18th August 2025.
According to a statement signed by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the online registration portal went live at 8:30 a.m., and by 3:30 p.m., the impressive figure had already been recorded.
“Of this figure, 33,803 (48.7%) are male while 35,573 (51.3%) are female. In terms of age, 48,033 (69.2%) are young persons aged 18-34,” the Commission revealed.
Olumekun explained that the registration portal is available round the clock and can be accessed at https://cvr.inecnigeria.org.
Meanwhile, INEC announced that in-person registration will commence on Monday, 25th August 2025, across its 811 State and Local Government offices nationwide.
“This will enable those who prefer the in-person option to register and for the online pre-registrants to complete their registration. The two options will proceed simultaneously throughout the duration of the CVR as indicated in the schedule earlier released by the Commission,” the statement said.
The Commission further assured that weekly updates will be provided from next week, covering detailed breakdowns by State, gender, age, occupation, and disability.
INEC reiterated that voter registration is strictly for Nigerian citizens aged 18 years and above who have not previously registered.
“Double or multiple registration is a violation of the law. However, inter-State/FCT and intra-State/FCT transfer of voters as well as the replacement of lost or damaged voters cards are allowed during the CVR,” Olumekun stated.
