NiMet Boosts Leadership Capacity to Improve Operational Efficiency

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has intensified efforts to enhance efficiency and strengthen internal capacity by organising a two-day Executive Leadership Programme (ELP) for its senior and mid-level managers.

The training, held in collaboration with the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria (Chartered), focused on equipping participants with the tools needed to navigate modern public-sector challenges.

Opening the programme, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, said effective management remains central to the agency’s growth, especially as climate change creates new operational demands.

He noted that no country should remain poor when it possesses both human potential and strong management systems.

According to him, the goal of the training is to ensure that NiMet’s workforce continues to demonstrate the capacity to address adaptive challenges and embrace continuous improvement.

He emphasised that management was created to reduce organisational chaos and establish order, making institutions run more efficiently and effectively.

In his words, operational success in a period of uncertainty requires managers who can deploy multidimensional approaches, build trust within their teams, and promote a culture of collaboration and excellence.

Throughout the two days, participants engaged in high-impact sessions covering a wide range of strategic areas. These included succession planning for future leadership, deeper stakeholder engagement across government and industry, improved financial management practices, and innovative approaches to public service delivery.

They also explored strategic leadership models, organisational culture, ethics in governance, and team leadership dynamics. Practical strategy games and simulations were used to sharpen decision-making and reinforce teamwork.

NiMet said the initiative reflects its commitment to continuous professional development and operational excellence. By strengthening the leadership capabilities of its workforce, the agency aims to ensure the delivery of accurate, timely, and reliable meteorological services that support national development and long-term sustainability.
