Lagos Approves 13% Fare Hike for BRT and BRI Bus Services

The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares for all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes, including Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard bus routes, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) announced on Monday.
According to the statement signed by LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu granted the approval following appeals from regulated public transport operators. The new fare structure is set to take effect from March 2, 2026.
“The review is also in line with the previously approved annual fare review mechanism,” the statement said, noting that the adjustment is aimed at cushioning the impact of sustained economic challenges affecting public transport operations in the state.
Officials highlighted that persistent inflationary pressures contributed to the decision, pointing out that Nigeria’s inflation rate stood at 15.2 per cent at the end of 2025, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
The statement further noted that Bus Operating Companies (BOCs) have faced rising operational costs, including vehicle maintenance, spare parts, and staff salaries, particularly following the implementation of the new national minimum wage.
LAMATA added that the fare increase would support investments in newer, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient buses to enhance passenger comfort and promote environmental sustainability.
While announcing the increase, the government reassured commuters of its commitment to balancing affordability with the provision of safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation services across Lagos.
The move marks the latest in efforts by the Lagos State Government to maintain operational viability for public transport operators while continuing to improve service quality for commuters.
