US Warns of Possible Terror Threat Against Embassy, Schools in Nigeria

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American diplomatic facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in the country.

In an advisory released on Monday, the mission urged American citizens living in or visiting Nigeria to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly when around U.S. government buildings and institutions linked to the United States.

According to the notice, the threat could affect facilities operated by the United States government, including the embassy in Abuja and the consulate in Lagos, as well as schools affiliated with the U.S.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the alert stated.

The mission advised American nationals to adopt additional safety measures when visiting the diplomatic premises or related institutions.

Among the precautions recommended were varying travel routes and schedules when heading to U.S. facilities, remaining alert to surroundings, and avoiding predictable routines.

The embassy also urged citizens to keep a low profile, stay vigilant in public places, and steer clear of large gatherings or demonstrations.

In addition, Americans were advised to ensure their mobile phones remain charged at all times and to take note of emergency exits when entering buildings.

Despite the security concerns, the mission clarified that the consular sections of both the embassy in Abuja and the consulate general in Lagos remain operational.

The advisory further encouraged U.S. citizens to monitor updates on the embassy’s official platforms and enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security information.

The warning comes days after the embassy issued another alert on March 4, cautioning American citizens about a potential protest in Abuja linked to rising tensions surrounding the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.

Authorities have not yet disclosed specific details about the nature or location of the suspected threat.
