Osimhen Sets New Champions League Record as Galatasaray Defeat Liverpool

Victor Osimhen delivered another standout performance in Europe on Tuesday night, setting a new record for the most goal involvements by a Nigerian in a single season of the UEFA Champions League as Galatasaray S.K. defeated Liverpool F.C. 1–0 in Istanbul.
The Nigerian striker’s contribution took his tally to eight goal involvements; seven goals and one assist in the competition this season, surpassing the previous Nigerian record of six.
The earlier mark had been jointly held by Ademola Lookman, Tijani Babangida, Yakubu Ayegbeni and John Utaka.
Tuesday’s match, the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16, saw Galatasaray take an early lead when Osimhen’s powerful header from a corner created the opportunity that resulted in the decisive seventh-minute goal by Mario Lemina.
Although the Super Eagles forward did not add to his personal tally during the match, he remained influential throughout the encounter, troubling Liverpool’s defence with his pressing, aerial strength and movement.
The victory gives the Turkish side a narrow advantage ahead of the return leg scheduled to take place at Anfield, home of Liverpool.
The night also carried emotional significance for Osimhen, as Galatasaray supporters unveiled a banner before kickoff in tribute to his late mother, a gesture that drew a warm response from the crowd.
With the new record already secured, Osimhen will have another opportunity to extend his tally when Galatasaray travel to England for the decisive second leg.
The performance further cements the striker’s growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s most impactful players on the European stage.
