2027: Adeleke Backs Tinubu’s Re-election Despite LG Crisis

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has declared his readiness to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, despite ongoing political tensions in the state.

The governor made his position known during a meeting with cabinet members, advisers and top political stakeholders at the Government House in Osogbo, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.

Adeleke said he would actively work for Tinubu’s second term, stressing that political disagreements at the state level would not affect his stance on national leadership.

“We have no problem with President Tinubu. He is our leader and represents the South West,” he said, adding that his administration’s endorsement of the President is “in the best interest of the region.”

The meeting was attended by key figures, including Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly Adewale Egbedun, and other party leaders.

The governor also used the occasion to appreciate residents for their support following his recent political realignment, noting that his party continues to gain traction across the state.

According to him, grassroots mobilisation efforts are intensifying, with local chapters engaging residents through regular activities aimed at strengthening support ahead of future elections.

Adeleke assured the people of Osun of improved governance, pledging to expand ongoing development programmes if given another mandate. He said his administration would place greater focus on youth empowerment, women, workers, as well as infrastructure, agriculture, education and healthcare.

He also directed party members and aides to deepen mobilisation across all wards in the state and highlight the achievements of his government as preparations for future campaigns gather pace.

Despite his endorsement of Tinubu, Adeleke remains locked in a protracted dispute with the All Progressives Congress over the control of local government councils in Osun.

The crisis dates back to the October 2022 local government elections conducted under former governor Adegboyega Oyetola. Chairmen elected in that poll, mostly from the APC, resumed office in February 2025, citing a Court of Appeal ruling.

However, the Adeleke administration conducted a separate election on February 22, 2025, which produced candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The situation has since escalated into violent clashes between supporters of both parties, leading to the deaths of at least six persons, including a local government chairman, Remi Abbas.

Both sides are currently seeking legal backing for their claims, as the dispute over council leadership continues.
