Soludo Sworn In for Second Term, Declares End to Monday Sit-At-Home

Governor Chukwuma Soludo has been inaugurated for a second term in office, declaring that the long-running Monday sit-at-home in Anambra State has come to an end.

Speaking on Tuesday at the inauguration ceremony held at Alex Ekwueme Square, the governor said improved security has restored normal life across the state.

“The debilitating sit-at-home is over, and our schools, markets, businesses and public servants are back to work,” Soludo said.

The Monday sit-at-home had, for years, disrupted economic and social activities across the South-East, as residents stayed indoors in protest over the detention of pro-Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu.

Soludo noted that the situation has changed significantly, pointing out that people can now move freely even on Mondays.

“I’m sure many of you flew into Anambra yesterday, being Monday. Previously, it was not possible,” he told guests at the event.

The ceremony drew several prominent figures, including former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, as well as Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Highlighting efforts to improve security, Soludo said his administration had dismantled 62 criminal camps and freed eight local government areas that were previously under siege.

He also cited a surge in visitors during the last festive season as evidence of growing public confidence.

“Anambra had its best Christmas season in decades, with a mass return and over 10,000 visitors per day to Solution City until January 10,” he said.

The governor attributed the progress to measures such as the Homeland Security Law 2025, which he said has helped reduce criminal activities.

He also warned against what he described as a growing culture among youths that promotes wealth without hard work, noting its link to rising crime.

As part of the crackdown, Soludo said several suspected criminal-linked native doctors are now on the run, while a prominent figure, Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, has been convicted and jailed, with his shrine destroyed.

The governor said his administration would continue to focus on restoring values of hard work and integrity, as part of efforts to secure the future of young people in the state.
